2009 Hawaii Sovereign Aloha Hawaiiana Collectors! Welcome to the 50th Anniversary of the 50th State with a very special Hawaii
Sovereign reverse die! 2009 is indeed a most interesting year. After 35 years in the Mint business, it isn't every year that you get arrested for counterfeiting US currency. So if you even think this Hawaiian Sovereign looks like a US coin, please read no further because extraordinary efforts have been made to bring this special "ultra high relief" (UHR) commemorative to you and for me not to be arrested, again! Due to legal circumstances beyond my control I have been barred from using the $50 denominated Hawaii Dala on the reverse of the commemorative for the 50th Anniversary of the 50th State of Hawaii. I find this detestable. Please note that this 2009 Hawaii Commemorative is not intended to be used as United States currency and any representation as such is strictly prohibited by law. With that disclaimer said, I hope you would still support this valiant effort to commemorate Hawaii with this most bizarre "mule." Please note, the numismatic dictionary defines MULE as: A coin, token, or medal, made by using two dies which were not originally intended for each other. Such is the case with the 2009 Hawaii Sovereign Commemorative. With little time or money before the end of the year, I was amazed to find the 1993 reverse die for the original one ounce silver "Hawaii Sovereign." Please note the reverse die is badly warn but the great design is still very engaging. The Hawaii Sovereign was introduced as a companion to the Overthrow Dala that commemorated, not celebrated, the 100th anniversary of the Overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893. The Sovereign obverse that featured the famous Kamehameha statue for the first time and also featured a reverse in all Hawaiian. Please click HERE for more info on Kamehameha the Great! The Sovereign design was an immediate success in 1993 and has remained one of the Mint's most famous designs. Periodically the date was changed in the pedestal. Rightly, the Kamehameha Sovereign design was used in 2004 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Mint. Then in 2007, I redesigned the Sovereign by moving the date to the right obverse field. Unfortunately, the 2007 Kamehameha Dala was disappointingly shallow. So in 2008 another die was cut, which measured up to the RHM standard for which it is known. Now the obverse of the 2009 Kamehameha commemorative for the 50th anniversary of Hawaii Statehood, features the famous Sovereign design with Kamehameha in ultra high relief (UHR) with a special 50th ANNIVERSARY in the pedestal. The relief is twice as deep as any RHM die in its 35-year history. If you are not familiar with UHR then just know that the die has been cut to the utmost depth and in a special way so that the detail is not only "ultra high relief" the commemorative is amazingly clear with great definition of detail. Of course the easiest way to appreciate UHR is to compare it to any government coinage except for the recently issued US Mint $20 Gold UHR, that proves that the government mint can do great work. The UHR obverse more that makes up for the warn reverse. The 1993 reverse features a contemporary heraldic design of Hawaiian symbols: The canoe symbolizes the journey of the Hawaiian people from their arrival to the present. At the bow stands Ka'ilimoku, Kamehameha's personal war god and the Palaoa, the royal symbol of the Alii (royalty), rests astern. The Puela, a five-sided ancient symbol of authority with crossed spears and symbolic islands that was flown from the highest point on the chief's canoe is positioned in the center. The state motto: UA MAU KE IA O KA AINA I KA PONO (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness) completes the masterpiece design. And while some people in Hawaii protest the dark side of the US Marines' participation in the Overthrow of Hawaii that ultimately led to Hawaii finally becoming the 50th State, this is an important event that warrants commemoration. So as a 30-year kamaaina (resident) of Hawaii, it is with a special feeling, I announce this 2009 Hawaii Sovereign, an unusual 50th anniversary commemorative for the 50th State anniversary. The 2009 Hawaii Sovereign is available in three issues. All three issues are expected to be quite small and most likely number less than 50 pieces.
